Linking: why native speakers seem to eat their words

You know every word in the sentence. You've studied them all individually. And yet when a native speaker says it out loud, half of it seems to vanish. That's not you failing to keep up — it's connected speech, the set of habits English speakers use to glue words together, and once you learn the patterns, the fast version stops sounding like a different language.

Consonant-to-vowel linking

The most basic habit: when a word ends in a consonant sound and the next word starts with a vowel sound, English speakers slide the consonant onto the front of the next word instead of pausing between them. An apple is said as uh-napple. Turn it off becomes tur-ni-toff. Look at it becomes loo-ka-tit. Nothing is technically dropped here — every sound is still present — but the syllable boundaries have moved, and if you're listening for pauses between words that match the spaces on the page, you'll miss it completely.

This is worth practising deliberately rather than waiting to absorb it by exposure alone, because it changes which syllable carries the consonant. Try saying an egg, turn it up, and not at all slowly, sliding each final consonant onto the next word on purpose, then speed up. Weak forms: the words that almost disappear

English has a small set of extremely common function words — to, for, of, and, a, the, can, was, them, her — that carry almost no stress in a sentence and get reduced to a quick, colorless vowel, usually the schwa /ə/. Said alone, to is /tuː/. Inside I want to go, it's closer to /tə/, almost swallowed between the two words around it. For in isolation is /fɔːr/; inside a cup for you, it shrinks to /fər/.

Learners often overlook weak forms because dictionaries and early lessons only teach the full, isolated pronunciation — the strong form — which is real but comparatively rare in actual conversation. Content words like nouns, main verbs, and adjectives keep their full vowels and get the sentence's stress; function words routinely don't. Recognizing that a word can legitimately sound different depending on its role in the sentence is often the single biggest listening breakthrough for intermediate learners.

Contractions and elision

Contractions like I'm, we'll, they've, and should've are the written tip of a much bigger habit called elision — quietly dropping a sound that would otherwise take extra effort to produce. Next day often loses its /t/ entirely, becoming nex day. Friendship can lose the /d/ between the two consonants around it. Must be frequently drops the /t/ to become mus be. None of this is laziness; it's the natural result of not wanting to squeeze three consonants together when the ear won't miss the middle one anyway.

This is also where a lot of learners' textbook pronunciation actually works against them: carefully pronouncing every consonant in must be true sounds noticeably more foreign than the elided version most Americans actually use, because full, unreduced consonant clusters are the unusual choice in fast, casual speech, not the neutral one.

Why this makes native speech sound so fast

Here's the part that reassures most learners: native speakers aren't actually producing more sounds per second than you are — measured syllable by syllable, careful speech and casual speech aren't wildly different in raw speed. What changes is how much gets compressed, dropped, or blended per syllable. A sentence that would take you ten clearly separated words to say gets delivered as five or six linked chunks, so it sounds faster even when the underlying rate is close to the same.

That's why simply asking someone to "talk slower" often doesn't help as much as you'd expect — a slowed-down version of connected speech is still connected, just stretched out, and the links, weak forms, and elisions are usually still there. What actually helps is knowing the patterns well enough that your ear can decompress them automatically, the same way a reader stops sounding out letters once whole words are familiar.

Training listening and speaking together

The most efficient practice pairs listening and speaking on the same material. Take a short sentence, listen to it several times focused on one feature at a time — first just the linking, then just the weak forms, then the elisions — and then say it yourself, deliberately reproducing each one rather than reading it as separate, careful words.
