Lessons Unit 2, lesson 5

ʊ + endings

Every ending the ʊ vowel takes, one row at a time. Say the vowel, let the ending close it, and check yourself against the words — all of them real, all verified by the engine.

What do the marks mean?
ˈriːdread Stressed part — say it louder & longer.
to Weak word — say it quickly & softly.
e Silent letter — don’t pronounce it.
θth Underline — these letters spell one sound.
wa·ter Dot · — a syllable break.
goon Linked — blend the words together.
?↗︎↘︎ Arrows — voice rises ↗︎ or falls ↘︎.
ˈsɛvən7 Number — how to say it aloud.
read² ² mark — has a second pronunciation.
guess? ? mark — a best guess; double-check it.

ʊthe oo in put

Round your lips a little — just a little — and keep it short: put, book. It is not the long oo of pool; your lips barely pucker.

One row per combination. Tap any word to hear it — every sheet comes straight from the tool.

A short list, on purpose

ʊ, the short oo in put, only closes off a handful of ways in English — this table covers them all: would, look, full, put, push. Round your lips just slightly, keep the sound brief, and don't let it stretch toward the long oo in pool. Even with so few rows, this is one of the more common vowels in short function words, so get every row here rock solid before moving on.

How to drill so few rows

With only five endings, run the whole table twice: once reading down for the vowel, once reading across each row so the ending sounds change. Compare full and fool if you know that word — same spelling family, very different length. Push and bush are your best pair for hearing ʊ stay short right before sh. This is a small vowel family in English, so once these five endings feel solid, you've covered nearly every common word that carries this sound.
