Lessons Unit 4, lesson 5

Two beats: water, paper, table

Two-syllable words bring stress into play. The highlighted syllable on the sheet is the strong one — say it louder and longer, and let the other one shrink. English rhythm lives in that contrast.

Now say it yourself

Read each word from its sheet, out loud, three times. Where there's a play button, listen first and copy what you hear. Slow is fine — clear beats fast.

ˈs s o f f ə a
sofa
ˈw w ɔː a ɾ t ɚ er
water
ˈp p a p p ɚ er
paper
ˈh h æ a p pp i y
happy
ˈl l ɛ e ɾ tt ɚ er
letter
ˈb b ʌ u ɾ tt ɚ er
butter
ˈt t a b b əl l e
table
ˈs s ɛ e v v e ən n
seven

All of these stress the first beat — the most common English pattern. WA-ter, not wa-TER.
