ɝthe ir in bird

Say a vowel with your tongue already curled for r — one sound, not vowel-then-r: bird, word, turn. It usually carries the word's stress.

ˈb b ɝ ir d d
bird
ˈw w ɝ or d d
word
ˈt t ɝ ur n n
turn
ˈɝ ur n n
urn

Now say it yourself

Read each word from its sheet, out loud, three times. Where there's a play button, listen first and copy what you hear. Slow is fine — speaking clearly matters more than speaking fast. Tap a word's microphone to record yourself and see which sounds landed.

ˈɡ g ɝ ir l l
girl
ˈf f ɝ ir s s t t
first
ˈw w ɝ or k k
work
ˈl l ɝ ear n n
learn
ˈn n ɝ ur s s e
nurse
ˈtʃ ch ɝ ur ch
church

The r is part of the vowel

This isn't a vowel followed by a consonant — it's one single sound, made by curling or bunching your tongue toward the roof of your mouth while you say the vowel itself. Learners who separate the two, saying something like "buh-rd" for bird, will sound choppy. Aim for one continuous, r-colored sound from start to finish, and notice that this vowel almost always carries the main stress of the word.

Spelling patterns

This sound appears after i (bird, girl, first), u (turn, urn, nurse, church), o (word, work), and ea (learn) — four different letters, all pointing to the same stressed, r-colored vowel.

Test yourself

Say turn slowly and check that your tongue stays curled the entire time, rather than flattening out partway through. If the sound wavers, you're likely splitting it into two movements instead of one.
